The city of Toowoomba’s history dates back to the year 1816 when English botanist and explorer Allan Cunningham travelled from Brazil to Australia. It was Cunningham who, in June of 1827 discovered 4 million acres of rich and fertile farming land, this land became known as the now well-known Daring Downs. It was bordered on the east by the Great Dividing Rang, and sat approximately 100 miles west of the Moreton Bay Settlement. It was thirteen short years later when George and Patrick Leslie established the Toolburra Station only 56 miles south-west of what is now known as the city of Toowoomba that the first settlers arrived on the Downs and established a township of bark-slab shops. By the end of 1840s the community of Drayton had developed to where it had its own trading post, newspaper, general store, and Inn, which was built by a man named William Horton. In many ways Horton is considered to be the founder of the city Toowoomba. Although he was not the first man to live there, he was the first major developer, and the Inn that he built in 1840 still stands today. By the year 1858 the city of Toowoomba was growing and developing quickly. The population had grown to over 500 people, and the city consisted of several stores and three hotels. On November 1860, the city of Toowoomba was official declared to be a new municipality.
